I'm often amazed at the turbulence that some relationships leave in their wake. The question that pops in my head from time to time is, what is it that one dreads the most at the end of their couplehood? There are enough answers to feed a box set of songs. Or more.
Originally written as a 6/8 ballad for Daizy Lux to sing in the Clementones. We only ran through a few times before we stopped playing altogether. Here I've refitted it in 4/4 and changed a word or two. It didn't quite work the way that I hoped it would, but I was to give it the old college try.
lyrics
Leaving
I’ll hold onto
My wounded heart
Though it’s been torn out and never will restart
I’m keeping track
Of every time
That I think I see your face and nearly die
The ring you returned is still in my pocket
The hardest part of leaving you
Is knowing that you’ll move on to
Holding somebody’s hand instead of mine
And now our friends
Are choosing sides
As if they never were quite sure of who they liked
And family
Are pulling strings
Dragging out their doubts in everyone and everything
The ring you returned is still in my pocket

The only thing that stops me from comparing this to Toots & The Maytals is the perfection and precision of the Delegators’ musicianship and Janet’s vocals. marc_ian
