I wrote this while on tour with Lo And The Magnetics (2005), inspired by yet another night of drinking (and dancing). Greg Crowe and The Scarlet Union did a great recording of this one later on when I had written the song off. Hearing their version that featured some striking harmonies and a wonderful horn arrangement kept it fresh in my mind when I was choosing songs for this project.
Like all the songs that will follow on this album, I decided to play all the instruments so this limited my arrangements somewhat and I kept it to a meat and potatoes approach. Hopefully not to the detriment of the song.
lyrics
ONE SONG
(M Girio)
The DJ won’t play my request
He’s only spinning records for his friends
one song, over and over again
I came here by myself
to hear something off the record shelf
but my heart must break to another song
everything he picks sounds so wrong
The DJ won’t play my request
He’s only spinning records for his friends
one song, over and over again
I’ve waited for so long
to hear something that’ll make me strong
but I’ll never last the whole night through
waiting for a note that is true
The DJ won’t play my request
He’s only spinning records for his friends
one song, over and over again

The only thing that stops me from comparing this to Toots & The Maytals is the perfection and precision of the Delegators’ musicianship and Janet’s vocals. marc_ian
